Ambisonics

One of my professional and artistic areas of expertise is spatial audio production and composition.  In the Arup office in San Francisco, we are very fortunate to have a SoundLab, which is a full-sphere ambisonic listening and production environment.  It’s a pretty special place — please contact me (shane.myrbeck[at]arup[dot]com) if you’d like to visit — we also have these rooms in NYC, LA, Chicago, London, Glasgow, Sydney, Melbourne and Hong Kong.  Professionally, the SoundLab is largely used for experiential architectural acoustics modeling, but you can imagine the capabilities of a 3-D audio system for artistic purposes… and I have a key and 24-hour access… so things happen.  Here’s an example:

This piece is a collaboration with my good friend and fellow Bay Stater, Raub Roy (aka Horaflora) this piece was composed for periphonic ambisonics and presented in the Arup SoundLab as part of the Me’di.ate group’s Playback: Soundlab.  Below is a binaural rendering of the piece, so please listen over headphones!
